Water Safety

What Is Water Safety?

Clean water is essential for your health. Most water systems naturally contain some bacteria, but they’re usually harmless. Problems only arise if bacteria multiply under the right conditions. This can cause Legionnaires’ Disease in extreme circumstances.

What Is Legionnaires’ Disease?

Legionnaires’ disease is a rare type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, which can grow in stagnant or stored water. Around 400–500 cases are reported in the UK each year.

It’s usually contracted by breathing in tiny water droplets, such as from showers or taps – not by drinking water. Early treatment is effective in most cases.

How We Manage Water Safety

In communal areas or shared properties, we:

  • Carry out regular water risk assessments
  • Check tap and outlet temperatures monthly
  • Flush unused outlets weekly
  • Clean communal shower heads every 3 months
  • Inspect water tanks and water condition annually
  • Maintain dosing units (where fitted)
  • Take action on any identified issues

What You Can Do

You can help reduce the risk of Legionella in your home by:

  • Running taps and showers if you’ve been away for a week or more
  • Cleaning taps and shower heads regularly to prevent limescale build-up
  • Flushing rarely used outlets (like outdoor taps) often
  • Keeping hot water at 50°C or higher – but take care to avoid scalding
